Chapter Eleven

“I can’t believe I let you talk me into this,” Spenser half-whispered.

“I can’t believe it either,” said Madison, “but misery loves company.”

Judging by the layout of the pizza restaurant, Madison thought it was better suited for gatherings after little league games or children’s birthday parties.

“Even I’m having second thoughts,” whispered Vivian, “and I was excited about this.” Her brown hair was down on her shoulders, shiny and pretty.

“Where’s Target?” asked Madison.

“Fifty miles away if she’s smart,” said Spenser.

Standing in the back of the room, Madison, Spenser, and Vivian took stock of the task in front of them. A dozen two-top tables were set up in a big circle going around the room. Each table had pencils and cards with numbers and boxes to check off. If Target ever got here, there would be exactly a dozen women, enough to sit at each table. There were nine guys now that Cliffy and Jay had arrived.

Cliffy gazed at her from across the room, and waved with a little smile. She smiled and waved back. She hoped he would actually meet someone nice tonight, then reminded herself he was kind of young for this crowd. But he and Jay looked great, and she was glad to see that they did indeed know how to clean up. They’d been exposed to elegant dinners at Pluto’s. Maybe they would know how to pull off acting mature. Just then Jay punched Cliffy in the arm, laughing, and Cliffy punched back. She sighed.

About half of the men present looked nice. One in particular was dressed quite fine, while another one looked kind of creepy. While waiting for the event to start, all the women had naturally congregated together on one side of the room, while the guys waited together on the other side. It felt like grammar school.

A cute little redhead standing near Madison said, “I think we outnumber them. But at least a few of them are cute.”

“Excuse me,” A busty blond in a low-cut neckline that exposed as much as it covered, stepped up to the group of women. “Is this Lightning Love?”

Madison nodded, “You’re in the right place.”

“Thank goodness,” she put her hand up to her heart, “I was driving around lost for a little while.”

Spenser said, “You’re in time. We’re waiting for it to start.”

The redhead leaned in, offering her hand to Madison, “I’m Beth. What’s your name?”

“I’m Madison,” they shook hands.

“Are we allowed to tell our names?” the busty blond asked.

Spenser answered, “Not to the guys. But we’ll have other ways to communicate.”

The blond threw her shoulders back. “I’m counting on it.”

Spenser laughed, “I’m going to have fun watching you work. I might have to take notes.” They gave each other a fist bump.

“Your new lipstick looks good,” said Madison, nudging Vivian.

“Those are cool earrings,” Spenser added.

Vivian took a deep breath, and a real smile made its way out. “Thanks, you guys.”

Spenser surveyed their surroundings. “Finding love at Freckle’s Pizza.” Her smile was crooked. “Sexy.”

“I may be nervous,” said Vivian, “but I don’t care where I meet them as long as they’re kind, intelligent, and employed.
